Papa Bouba Diop and Jermain Defoe hit first-half goals as Pompey eased to victory against Blue Square Premier outfit Oxford at the Kassam Stadium.
Peter Crouch and Defoe were partnered up front for the Blues while Niko Kranjcar and Lassana Diarra made their first pre-season appearances in England after being given an extended break following Euro 2008.
And Diop almost added a third late in the game when Crouch’s pass found him free in the area. Only a fine save from Cole prevented the Senegal star from doubling his tally.
But it was Oxford who did manage to grab a goal in stoppage time when Alex Fisher slid the ball home from close range.
