36000 Seats In Pompey

So Pompey have announced the plans for the new stadium on Horsea Island. I for one like the look of it very much so I hope it happens. I also like the idea of the concert venue that will hold 10000 seats, so I hope some good bands come down to play.

Stadium Stuff

I got this from PFCAB interesting!

I think we may see some prelimenary Architecs drawings in the next week or
so ,

***

Correct, my father in law works over at HMS Excellent (ex Sailor) and the
commanding officer (who is in control of Horsea Island) as well showed
them these drawings/plans last week.

It shows the ground going length ways north to south parrallel to the
motorway
2000 houses going along the north side of the lake along with berths

The Navy moving all buildings to the south east corner of the lake
complete with Helecopter pad.

motorway being added to the current Paulsgrove junction on M275 north
bound
and east bound, with another junction southbound on M275 coming from the
A27 westbound.

He was really excited by what he saw and he says because its MOD land they
can do what they want despite what the tree huggers/opposers say, so any
area of "scientific importantance" wont wash and wont hold up the
development. Like the training ground he says "it will happen" because
everyone is in agreement, MOD, Council, Club etc.

Got this second bit from Wiki!

In October 2007,Portsmouth F.C. announced plans to build a 36,000 seat football stadium on the south-east corner of Horsea Island, near to the M275 Motorway. The proposed new stadium at Horsea Island is planned for completion in 2011.However, the plan is beset with serious logistical problems, notably the paucity of access by road and rail. Moreover the site is less than 1 m above sea level, and sea levels are predicted by some to rise by up to 6 metres by 2100. Lastly, much of the proposed housing development, necessary to help fund the stadium, falls within the SSSI, and as such is most unlikely to be approved. A formal planning application has yet (May, 2008) to be submitted

Training Ground Latest

The News:

Pompey plans are welcomed

05 June 2008
By
Rob Dabrowski

PLANS for the new Pompey training ground were welcomed with open arms at a
public meeting.
More than 100 people packed into last night's meeting to hear about the
multi-million pound proposal for the Alver Valley and to grill the team
behind it.

The proposed £8m facilities were welcomed by the majority and the few
dissenting voices were booed by the crowd, a handful of whom were decked
out in blue T-shirts.

Portsmouth FC chief executive Peter Storrie, the architect behind the
design and the project manager talked residents through plans and answered
questions at the meeting at Lee Community Centre.

The majority spoke out in favour of the facilities, which will be
available for schools and residents to use outside training times.

Builder Fred Bowman, 37, of Skipper Way, Lee-on-the-Solent, said: 'I think
it's a great thing for the area.

'I've lived in Lee all my life and all we get here is more houses but this
is fantastic news and I think it will keep the kids off the streets and
give them something to do.'

The handful of people who voiced concern about the impact on the area were
jeered and heckled by the crowd.

Janet Carter, 54, a finance manager of Fitzroy Drive, Lee-on-the-Solent,
said: 'Every time someone spoke and had an objection they were booed down
? I think there were more Portsmouth FC fans there than local residents.

'I'm against the plans because I think it will cause disruption and lower
the value of my house.

'If this wasn't everyone's favourite football club, which has just won the
FA Cup, there wouldn't be such a positive response.'

Mr Storrie was pleased with the meeting and said as long as plans are
approved by Gosport Borough Council in July building work will be due to
start in late August.

'I think it went very well and about 80 per cent of people seemed to
support plans,' he said.

'I'm very positive and I think those people that did have concerns had
their questioned answered ? this is a professional operation and
disturbance will be minimal.'

He added: 'At the end of the day, it's a public meeting and people can
make comments against comments.

'That's what open meetings are all about.'

THE COMPLEX will be almost 10 times the size of the club's current
training site at Eastleigh.

The 35-acre site, next to the Cherque Farm estate, will include an
18,000sq ft building, which will house changing rooms, medical facilities,
and a gym.ADVERTISEMENT

There will be 12 full-size pitches, two mini-soccer pitches and a
designated goalkeeping area.

There will also be a three-quarter size indoor pitch for the club's
academy, which will have its own separate building.

Two full-size pitches will be dedicated to community use and the indoor
facilities will be available for schools in the Gosport area when the team
are not using it for training.

First team players will spend four days a week training at the site,
usually between 9.45am and 1pm.

The pitches used for top- flight training will be inside a secure fenced
area to stop fans congregating to watch their heroes going through the
paces.

The new facilities will also create an estimated 15 unskilled jobs for
local people.

Business experts predict the proposals will provide a boost to the local
economy as well as much-needed facilities for the community.

Shaun Farrell, a broker for Gosport-based business experts Impact, said:
'It'll definitely put the area on the map. It'll make it a more attractive
place for businesses.'

Pompey will help fund visitor facilities for the Alver Valley Country
Park, which will be built next to the site by the council.

The club will lease the land from the council.

It is hoped the facilities will be ready to be opened by July next year.

A Bit Of Pompey History Part 1

The Pompey Chimes

The best known chant sung by Portsmouth supporters is the Pompey Chimes ("Play up Pompey, Pompey play up", sung to the tune of the Westminster Chimes) which is sung around Fratton Park. The origins of the 'Pompey Chimes' lies with the Royal Artillery, Portsmouth's most popular and successful football team for much of the 1890s, who played many of their home games at the United Services ground in Burnaby Road. The nearby Guildhall clock would strike the quarter hours and the referees would use the clock to let them know when the match should finish at 4pm. Just before 4pm the crowd would lilt in unison with the chimes of the hour to encourage the referee to blow the whistle signifying full time. The original words to 'The Chimes', as printed in the 1900-01 Official Handbook of Portsmouth FC, were:

Play up Pompey,
Just one more goal!
Make tracks! What ho!
Hallo! Hallo!!

With the demise of Royal Artillery after their expulsion from the 1898-99 F.A Amateur Cup for alleged professionalism, many of Royal Artillery's supporters transferred their allegiance to the newly formed Portsmouth F.C. and brought the Chimes chant with them.

Their home ground has been named by some as nicknamed "Fortress Fratton". Atmospheres which are most memorable include Portsmouth's 1-0 win over Stockport County in the 1997/98 season which helped Alan Ball's side to an incredible escape from relegation to division 2. A journalist described it best, saying "each attack from Stockport was seemingly halted by a wall of sound.
